Adega Familiar Eladio Pineiro
'Frore de Carme' Solo Albarino, Rias Baixas, Spain 2013
Eladio Piñeiro launches the wine cellar Mar de Frades (the name of the brand with the blue bottle and a galleon appearing when the wine reached its optimal temperature)…. The wine was very successful and orders from around the world exceeded supply and ownership refused to lower the standards and increase supply… the winery finally grew to take a few additional orders but they did it through high standards and deep philosophy of quality.
I contacted the importer… they only had one wine available for me to purchase – a rare and limited reserve Albarino… I again took a deep breath and said… lets try it… and a sample was sent for my review.
- A company must have a purpose other than just earning money.
- “Wine breaks the shield that the struggle for life causes us all, a shield of hypocrisy and
makes it transparent.” Paraphrasing Pasteur : “ There´s more philosophy in a bottle of
wine than in all books”
- Biodynamic farming
- Artisan Hand Crafting Style
- Incredibly detailed vineyard work
- Slow hands on winemaking
- Quality over quantity
- His wife Carmen designs the labels
- He commissioned the unique and patented bottle shapes
- He uses glass cap closure on the bottle… so nothing interveres with quality.
About the Wine:
Adega Familiar Eladio Pineiro 'Frore de Carme',
Solo Albarino, Rias Baixas, Spain 2013
- Product Line: White
- Varietal: Albariño
- Country: Spain
- Region: Rias Baixas
- Farming Type: Biodynamic
- 100% Albariño, average age of the vineyards
30 years, biodynamic for 8 years, located at
Salnés Valley. Aged 1.2 years on fine lees in
stainless steel (monthly batonnage), and 6
months bottle aged.
Abandon everything you think you know about Albariño when you taste this wine, which was on the lees for fourteen
months with monthly batonnage, then given extended bottle age before release. Think instead of recent releases of
aged Muscadet, but then add a layer of fruit and density you will never get in that region, and the cognate becomes
somewhere between Muscadet and Riesling, a land of milk and honey that you want to visit again and again.
