Harvest Notes
***
This vintage “suffered” in quantity from very high temperatures and not enough rain… but the quality hit typical “excellent to above normal” for this legendary estate that uses maniacal standards to ensure greatness. Flowering started in late May in perfect conditions as the emergence of the first bunches was to prove. But, the hot weather, not dissimilar to the heatwave of 2003, immediately set in. The condition of the grapes indicated that the harvest would be early, and it eventually started on 14 August. The harvest volume was down by about 20%, but the grapes were very homogeneous and of impeccable quality.

Domaines Ott was founded in 1912 by Alsatian engineer Marcel Ott. Today, the wineries are owned and managed by Champagne Louis Roederer, producing some of the world’s most prestigious wines. These wines are made at three distinctively different estates: Château Romassan (Bandol), Clos Mireille and Château de Selle (both Côtes de Provence).

Ian Blackburn, WineCloudInc - Wine Reviewer 98 points Rose is the wine of the moment world wide – and this is the number one brand – the category leader - from the package to the product inside – this represents the standard which all other Rosé are compared. There is an intensity, and purity that all producers wish they could emulate. Its 2x’s more expensive and worth every penny… in a class all to its own… The ultra pale pink is very sexy, and gleams of richness, intensity and quality that is truly special. The nose is restrained, elegant, perfumed, hints of lavender – I’m waiting for a perfume company to come out with a rose perfume with as much class and style …. From the soft cherry, to the citrus and melon… and salinity that defines this Mediterranean masterpiece. The finish is persistent and leaves the mouth refreshed, the mind empowered and the heart full of hope and optimism… because that is what perfection does.

The Château de Selle sits on a limestone slope in the forested inland reaches of Provence. The soil is nearly half rock and the sun is intense, an imposing landscape for cultivating anything, yet this rosé is one of the most elegant we tasted from the 2017 vintage. The concentration of the fruit comes through in the wine’s luxurious satin texture, while the flavors remain restrained—hints of melon, lemon and red cherry highlighting its earthy savor. It’s very pale, but don’t let the hue fool you: It’s structured and mineral, a firm rosé that wouldn’t be out of place at Le Bernardin. - Wine & Spirits

The Journey of Marcel Ott
***
In 1896, after a tour of France’s many vineyards, Marcel Ott, a young graduate in agronomy engineering from Alsace, finally found an estate that inspired him. To set the scene, we are in Provence. The Mediterranean is lapping at the shore a mere stone’s throw away...
In these parts, growing vines is the legacy of ancient times. Alas, a short while before Marcel Ott’s discovery, phylloxera had wreaked havoc on the vines. The land was cheaper, but the vineyards would have to be replanted. The wine had lost a great deal of its soul in the vineyard’s reconstruction. Marcel Ott bought several estates and began renovating them with the determined ambition to create great Provencal wines from noble grape varieties. |
Today, 120 years later, cousins Christian and Jean-François Ott dedicate their life to their ancestor’s love for the site. In 2004, Domaines Ott* joined Louis Roederer and its fabulous selection of wine craftsmen.
