Vignamaggio Castello di Monna Lisa, Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG, Italy 2011
Overview of the Wine
Vignamaggio, one of Tuscany’s oldest farming estates, is located in Greve, right in the heart of the Chianti Classico region. At the core of the estate is the Renaissance Villa surrounded by Italian-style gardens, rows of cypresses, vines and olive groves.
The Villa was built in the 14th Century and became famous as the childhood home of the famous Monna Lisa Gherardini, the “Gioconda” painted by Leonardo da Vinci.
The Chianti Classico Gran Selezione is the winery’s flagship wine, dedicated to the famous Monna Lisa (a.k.a. La Gioconda). It is only produced in the best vintages with a careful selection of grapes from the winery’s prime southwest growing areas.
85% Sangiovese, 15% Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon
Greve, Chianti, Tuscany, Italy
Deep ruby red in color, Monna Lisa offers tons of density and structure, yet remains elegant with aromas of dark berries, tobacco and savory herbs. Enjoy with hearty meat dishes, stews and roasts.
“The 2011 Chianti Classico Riserva Monna Lisa hits the palate with a rush of dark red cherry, plum, smoke, spice, tobacco and new leather. Broad and ample on the palate, the 2011 captures the essence of the warm year in its generous, resonant personality.”
"A red that smells like wild strawberries with even some lemon zest coming through, this muscular, angular wine is currently dominated by muscular tannins on the palate, making the finish rather firm. By 2017 some more fruit and mineral highlights should make for a powerful yet enjoyable Chianti Classico Gran Selezione.”
"A fluid red, with flavors of leather, cherry, tobacco and underbrush boosted by bracing acidity and assertive tannins. Stays juicy and long on the finish. Think herbroasted or grilled lamb. Best from 2017 through 2024. 3,500 cases made.”
