Fattoria dei Barbi 'Vigna del Fiore', Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, Italy, 2011
Overview of the Wine
La Vigna del Fiore is a single plot of 5.7 hectares (14 acres) of stony land placed in a place where the vine has been cultivated since 1500; it is the most southern vineyard of the company and one of the oldest. Its special exposure and soil composition give this Brunello elegance, finesse of aromas and complexity on the palate.
Produced since 1981, it is a wine with a great capacity for aging, but, due to its harmony and pleasantness, it can be enjoyed since the first years of bottle.
100% Sangiovese Grosso
Brunello di Montalcino DOCG
Deep ruby red color with garnet notes on the rim. Complex aromas of cherry, blackcurrant, plum, almond and vanilla with hints of balsamic. The aromas repeat on the palate which is smooth and balanced with added spice and a long, persistent finish. This wine is generally ready to drink soon after release and has an excellent capacity to age.
Pairs with richly flavored dishes such as stewed red meats or game, grilled or mixed roasts. Tasty and well seasoned hard cheeses. Perfect as a "meditation wine".
Following harvest, the fruit undergoes a pre-fermentation cold maceration (“cold-soak”), which consists of cooling the grapes at a temperature of 3°-5°C (37 – 41°F) in an anaerobic environment (under a CO2 blanket) to protect the fruit from oxidation. This non-alcoholic, aqueous extraction results in an increased color intensity and stability, softer astringency and tannins and more body and aromatics. After 48 hours, the temperature is raised and alcoholic fermentation begins, lasting 16 -17 days and temperatures reach 29°- 30°C (81 – 86°F). After racking and malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged in small-medium size oak barrels (500L – 20HL) for the first months, followed by two years in 30HL Slavonian oak casks. The wine rests in bottle for four months before release.
