Querciabella 'Camartina' Toscana IGT, Tuscany, Italy, 2011
Overview of the Wine
Opulent and nuanced, Camartina perfectly embodies Querciabella’s gift for finesse and elegance. The estate’s signature Super Tuscan since 1981.
Querciabella’s flagship, Camartina, is one of a handful of history-making wines that dramatically elevated the standing and prestige of Italian wine production on the world stage.
This critically acclaimed Super Tuscan is only produced in optimal vintages, while small batch micro-vinification and an extremely limited bottling guarantee hand-crafted excellence. This silky smooth expression of Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese embodies Querciabella’s quest for finesse, balance and sheer drinkability.
The vineyards where the grapes for Camartina are grown have been organically farmed since 1988, and then fully converted to biodynamic techniques in 2000.
Grape / Blend
70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Sangiovese
95 - James Suckling
A dense, rich red with dried-berry, orange-peel and chocolate character. Full body, soft, silky tannins and a long, flavorful finish. A blend of sangiovese and cabernet. Biodynamically grown grapes.
93 - Decanter
I like the 2011s from Tuscany a lot, and this wine is no exception. It was a pretty hot vintage in most of Italy, but the fruit tended to be ripe and charming rather than jammy. This has super-bright, precise leafy blackcurrant notes, very pure and intense - I love the nose! On the palate the firm, compact tannins are ripe but tight, joined by vibrant, juicy cassis flavours and bright acidity. It's a controlled, very Cabernet-dominant style - a lively, joyful expression.
92 - Wine Spectator
Still showing some oak, with hints of resin and vanilla, along with plum, blackberry, iron and tobacco notes. Dense and beefy, finishing long and concentrated. Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese.
